Possible new traineee

Published: Dec 02, 2008

I'm 57, in good health, always wanted to fly, if for no other reason just to see if I can do it. Been on ground crews in Navy, small planes, big planes ect. How tough is the Med exam? Does normal Blue Cross Blue Shield pay for it? I had a minor heart attack a year ago, have a stint in me, and am fine, best in 20 years. My concern is how stict the vision is? I have a minor far sightness, but I remeber from the physicals when I was in the Navy, which were strict for pilots, I always missed 2 out of 20 visual exams. Depth. Is the private lic that strict?

Found a good flight school, and need a physical, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. But someone mentioned Insurance Co's don't like to pay for AME exams??????????

Thx for any help

As a general rule insurance will not pay for a FAA exam. Not to worry about your eye sight. It is your heart attack in the past that would concern me. Before you go take a medical for your student license talk to an AME without applying for a medical. I'm not sure but a rejection for the 3rd class medical may prevent you going for the recreational license where you do not need a medical. Surely someone out there is up on the regs and can give a little help here. Do not take a physical until you know the facts.

Somewhere I read that if you know you will fail the med exam it doesn't mean you can avoid taking an exam then apply for Sport pilot cert. Dont ask me how they know you knew. lol Best is to talk to a med examiner. Eyes have to be 20 20 correctable for pilots ...you need to fly with a spare set of glasses tho. DMV eye test is 20 40 correctable, so the eye charts at DMV are 20 40 charts. dd

You can instruct, like for BFR's but the pilot you're checking has to qualify as PIC. dd

Hello all: Just go to the FAA website www.FAA.gov and then type in medical certificates there. There is a lot of info on all scenarios. Airfreddy
