Garmin 430/530

Published: Jun 30, 2002

Now that most general aviation manufacturers of piston singles have switched from BK Silver Crown avionics to the new Garmins as standard equipment, I was wondering if the CDI's in the Garmins can replace the CDI instruments in the panel and fly away IFR legal?

If so, all you would need for an IFR panel would be a pair, or even a single Garmin for nav/com's and the "sacred six".

You'll need to check with the Garmin folks, but I ***think*** you have to use the traditional OBS's to be legal, even if they're being driven by the Garmin avionics. I do know that on precision approaches, the stack will automatically set up the ILS freq for you, etc., but it all still drives an external CDI.

For what it's worth.
