Does a pilot need to know how to read?

I have a friend who is interested in flight training, but he has a slight problem. He has a very hard time reading, due to a condition that sounds similar to dyslexia. Everything else is fine...he holds a drivers license, completed school, and has a job....I didnt even realize it until he told me.
The FARs state that a pilot must be able to "speak, read and write in English", but is there some way he could take to attain a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) for a pilots certificate?
As a sidenote: He only wants to be a private pilot...no aspirations further.
Any help would be appreciated!
