Is this program useful in preparation for Instrument training?

I'm currently struggling with Instrument training. I bought the IP Trainer thinking it would let me practice at home and shorten the process. I quit using it after a few weeks. Why? Well, its a well-produced product that leads you through the various maneuvers and procedures in a structured way, but the sheer difficulty of controlling the simulator as compared to a real plane (or even an AST-300 simulator) eventually put me off. Its almost impossible to get the "plane" trimmed such that it will fly level for more than a second or two and you end up struggling with the controls all the time when you should be able to concentrate on the other aspects of the training.

My instructor says this is good and will teach me to concentrate on my scan, so take you pick!
