Drive or Fly

Published: Apr 17, 2002

I have to fly frequently from DC to Cape Cod on business. I just checked with US Air, and the fare is now $779.50 (RT)to Fly from Reagan to Hyannis! ( I don't want to go out of BWI because is an hours drive and last time I was there, 4 hours waiting on line to go thru security) This is with a change in NY and who knows how many other stops. Not only can I drive there for 1/10th the cost, (but that would take and entire day). The Fare on AMTRAK, first class, on the Acela express is $498(RT) to Providence. This includes two hot meals served on china with cloth napkins and real silverware. Oh you might think I'd save a lot of time flying, but you'd be wrong. There is no way I can get to Hyannis by commercial air before 1PM, about the same time as if I took the train to Providence and then rented a car.

You know what I realized! The cheapest way is to rent a plane and fly myself! The trouble is, the weather on the Cape always stinks.

I must read articles like this a half dozen times semianually. I find them a waste of time. I'm in the Navy stationed at Norfolk, VA and my wife lives in Muncy, VA. They call me a geobachelor. Any way If I flew home I have to fly into Philly or Pittsburg and then a cummuter to Williamsport Regional (IPT) It's the commuter that kills you. Sorry, bad verb usage. I should say ,that drives up the price. That is my main gripe about articles like this they always only consider major to major airports and never from major to commuter airports like IPT. Having said that let me add this. I can rent a C-172 or comparable airplane (restrictions of my ticket). That will run me about $78/hr wet (that's cheap)it turns out to be a 3-4 hour trip depending on whether I fly throught the Balt/DC TCA or west of it. Then there is a minimum flight time on the plane to pay. Usually a couple of hours a day rental keeping the plane 3 days. That is going to be around $550.00 so any way you look at it, it's cheaper to drive! It's only a 7 hr drive on friday and 6 on sunday night. Plus I would not want to fly at night over the route that I would like to fly so once again, driving is better. The car is paid for the tires are brand new and the gas is less than 40.00 round trip. Sorry guys it is cheaper to Drive. Oh how I wish it was otherwise!!!
