Dogs in the cockpit

Published: Aug 05, 2003

I wasn't sure where this fit into the forum but I put it in "gear" because I might need some doggie ear plugs. Do I need to worry about my dog's hearing because of the noise level of the cockpit? We all wear headsets and can forget about the constant noise going on but the dogs hear it (and probably louder than we do given their keen sense of hearing).

Our two standard poodles fly with us often, and we haven't considered using earplugs. We do safety harness them into the backseat (don't need 55 pounds of affection, each, to join us in the front). I suppose it depends on how much your dog flies with your. Ours get about 12 hours a year (miserable percentage when you consider how much I fly!).

Is a good idea IF...you can get your companion to tolerate them. I flew with my buddy for quite a few years, in the past, and did not put headgear on him. I did try putting foam plugs in, but that did not last long! Maybe slow-condition your buddy at home or ? and get them used to the thing you are trying to help them with.
