A question from a fellow class mate in a mountain groundschool course over the weekend has got us both wondering something. He used to fly in the RAF, and claims that the air data computers in aircraft (perhaps military aircraft he used to be familiar with?) correct altitude for temperature (is that then called "true altitude", or something else?).
However, since not all aircraft will have this correction, you can't have some people flying at this corrected altitude, and others flying as the indicated altitude, right?
A quote from my ground school manual, From the Ground Up, confirms this: "Since all altimeters in the same area are equally affected by temperature error, air traffic regulations require you to fly only at indicated altitude" (Millenium ed., p. 42).
But he swears that some ADCs do correct their altitude displays for temperature, and display that instead of indicated altitude. I could find no reference to anything like this in the G1000 manuals on Garmin's site.
Any thoughts folks?
