Great article. I recently started working on a tailwheel endorsement. I went from flying a G1000 enabled Diamond Star to a CubCrafters Top Cub. I realized quick that some of my own stick and rudder skills had eroded from to much time with the autopilot. However, I loved being back in such a simple plane and not worrying about monitoring gauges but flying by feel and the great view out the windows.
I completely agree that there is a benefit in training in simpler aircraft to build stick & rudder skills then moving up to more advanced aircraft once those skills are engrained.
