March is Women's History Month, and the 8th of March marks a particularly auspicious day in Women's History: the centennial anniversary of the first woman's pilot certificate issued in the world. On March 8, 1910, Raymonde de Laroche, who was already an experienced balloonist, was the first woman to be awarded a pilot's certificate.
To mark the occasion, the Centennial of Licensed Women Pilots is trying to set a worldwide record, on March 8th, for the most women introduced to aviation in a single day (is there already a record for this? I'm not sure, but surely, this new event will break the mark!). It is, in essence, a worldwide 'Young Eagles' day for women of any age. There are other events scheduled around the anniversary date, as well — if you're in the Washington, D.C. area, the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is having a Women in Aviation and Space Day on March 13th.

I found this disturbing news on the University of Illinois' Institute of Aviation web site. It seems that due to Illinois' dismal financial condition a top Aviation Degree Program might be in danger of elimination.
I have friends flying for major airlines who got their commercial certificate and college degree from there, it would be a darn shame to lose that program and quite possible Willard Airport.
