100 Years of Women's Aviation

This month marks another important centennial mark — the entry of women into aviation.

March is Women's History Month, and the 8th of March marks a particularly auspicious day in Women's History: the centennial anniversary of the first woman's pilot certificate issued in the world. On March 8, 1910, Raymonde de Laroche, who was already an experienced balloonist, was the first woman to be awarded a pilot's certificate.

To mark the occasion, the Centennial of Licensed Women Pilots is trying to set a worldwide record, on March 8th, for the most women introduced to aviation in a single day (is there already a record for this? I'm not sure, but surely, this new event will break the mark!). It is, in essence, a worldwide 'Young Eagles' day for women of any age. To register for the event, or to get more information, go to: centennialofwomenpilots.com.

There are other events scheduled around the anniversary date, as well — if you're in the Washington, D.C. area, the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is having a Women in Aviation and Space Day on March 13th.

For more information on the anniversary, and other potential events and ways to get involved, see waishowdaily.blogspot.com.

Slightly off topic but important nonetheless.

I found this disturbing news on the University of Illinois' Institute of Aviation web site. It seems that due to Illinois' dismal financial condition a top Aviation Degree Program might be in danger of elimination.

I have friends flying for major airlines who got their commercial certificate and college degree from there, it would be a darn shame to lose that program and quite possible Willard Airport.

The Institute of Aviation is currently under review by the University. In response to the University’s fiscal challenges, a project team has been appointed by the Interim Chancellor and Provost to review the Institute of Aviation. To view a copy of the charge letter sent to the project review team, please visit http://oc.illinois.edu/budget/aviation-charge.pdf.

The financial context of the University and the state of Illinois is a catalyst for this review. At this time, the state of Illinois owes approximately $431 million to the University of Illinois. For more information on the state’s financial crisis and its impact on the University please visit http://oc.illinois.edu/budget/financialposition.html.

We need your help. We are asking our alumni, students, staff, parents, industry leaders, and friends to write letters of support for the Institute of Aviation and the quality education we provide. The simplest way to help is to go to this website: http://www.aviation.illinois.edu/internal/groupmailer/ where you can send a letter of support to Wynne Korr , Dean of the School of Social Work and Chair of the Institute of Aviation Project Review Team. You may use any or all of the form letter to help compose your message of support to the Chair of the project review team.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Tom Emanuel, Interim Director

Institute of Aviation
