Dynon’s new D2 Pocket Panel, unveiled over the weekend, improves on the company’s original D1 portable EFIS by incorporating built-in Wi-Fi for connecting the unit with iPad, smartphone and tablet apps.
Wi-Fi connectivity allows the D2 to transmit flight data including attitude, GPS ground speed, altitude, vertical speed, Gs and ground track to any compatible aviation application, which can then show that data on a flight information display. Compatible apps include WingX Pro7, AOPA FlyQ, Bendix/King myWingMan, iHUD Remote, and Air Navigation Pro.
The D2 (not to be confused with Garmin’s new D2 pilot watch) also now includes a G-meter, which presents a graphical round dial with the current load factor shown by a needle. It also records the minimum and maximum Gs since last reset by the pilot.
The D1 and D2 utilize the same Dynon micro-machine-based attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) technology that’s found in the avionics maker’s panel-mount EFIS products for the experimental and light sport aircraft markets. Both portable units include artificial horizons with accurate pitch and roll, and can find the horizon even if turned on in flight. The AHRS sensors also drive a turn rate indicator and slip/skid ball. Included is an internal GPS receiver to display GPS ground speed, altitude, vertical speed, and ground track.
The D2 retails for $1,425, and the original D1 has a new lower price of $1,195.
