Icon Delivers First A5 LSA Amphib

Sean Tucker takes delivery of Young Eagles' A5.

A large crowd gathered this morning at Icon Aircraft’s booth on the EAA AirVenture show grounds in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to witness the first delivery of Icon’s A5 amphibious light sport aircraft. Flanked by about 40 Young Eagles participants wearing matching outfits, Icon’s founder and CEO Kirk Hawkins handed over the keys to famed air show pilot and EAA Young Eagles chairman Sean D. Tucker, who took delivery of the airplane on behalf of the Young Eagles program.

Both Tucker and EAA chairman Jack Pelton spoke during the event and raved about the flight characteristics of the A5, which was designed to be spin resistant. Based on the safety features incorporated in the design, the FAA approved a weight increase for the A5 beyond the amphibious LSA restrictions.

The A5 is a two-seat carbon-fiber airplane with foldable wings to make it transportable and easy to store. It is powered by a Rotax 912iS engine producing 100 hp.

The first 100 A5s will be equipped with what Icon has termed the Founder’s Edition configuration, which include the FAA required BRS parachute, LED night lighting, and Garmin’s aera 796 GPS and a few interior upgrades. The price tag for the Founders Edition airplanes is $247,000.

Icon has taken more than 1,250 deposits for the A5 through a highly successful promotional campaign. The A5 that was delivered, Serial Number 001, was the first to receive an S-LSA airworthiness certificate following the ASTM approval process and required FAA audit, which Icon completed in June.
