Supersonic Business Jet Reveals Windowless Cabin

Embedded screens provide greater flexibility.

Spike Aerospace has revealed a futuristic interior for its S-512 supersonic business jet, currently in the development phase. The high-tech cabin has been designed with no windows. Instead, the cabin walls are embedded with massive computer screens, allowing the occupants to choose the view.

Should Spike make its cool SSBJ design a reality, its passengers will be able to choose from such displays as, a selection of scenic photography, movies, PowerPoint presentations, dimmed or dark screens for sleeping, or panoramic views of the exterior environment, provided by cameras outside the airplane. In addition to providing a cool look, the windowless cabin eliminates the issues of providing additional structural support for the windows, allowing engineers to design a lighter fuselage with less drag.

Some people have responded negatively to the idea of a windowless cabin, with the concern of a claustrophobic environment. But Spike’s Vik Kachoria expects that people will have no problem getting accustomed to the new idea.

“I have no doubt that adjustments will have to be made as the system is tested in actual flight conditions,” Kachoria said. “But I do expect that windowless cabins will be the norm within 20 years, or sooner, on all new aircraft.”

Spike hopes its supersonic jet will cut flight times by as much as 50 percent, enabling flights from New York to London in three to four hours.
