Piper Indefinitely Suspends PiperJet Altaire

Piper Altaire

Piper on Monday indefinitely suspended its single-engine Altaire jet, previously known as the PiperJet, saying it would be unlikely to recoup its investment in a reasonable period of time.

"Following an evaluation of Altaire development and light jet forecasts we determined the best course of action for the company going forward,” interim Piper president/CEO Simon Caldecott said in an email release, “is to indefinitely suspend the program, preserving intellectual property and progress to date." This course of action seems to leave Piper’s options for the jet open going forward.

The company also says that it was not a question of the program’s progress or the Altaire hitting its targets; it was, said Caldecott, ”... on schedule, on budget, and hitting aircraft performance targets.” Piper’s review of the program, he continued, revealed that “planned development costs had risen above the point that were recoverable under foreseeable light jet market projections.”

Piper plans to lay off 150 workers as a result, most of them employees who were working on the Altaire program. "Unfortunately and regrettably, this will have serious consequences for many talented Piper employees," said Caldecott. The move will reduce the level of employment at Piper’s Vero Beach plant from 850 workers to 700.

Caldecott also said the company regrets the consequences of the decision on Piper Altaire customers to whom it says, it will issue refunds or, at the customer’s option, give them a credit toward another Piper product.

Caldecott said that the company plans to “ step up product improvements for our turboprop and piston-powered product lines” and to add engineers toward that end.

Not much chance for success with a SINGLE engine jet anyhow. Not as nice looking as the Cessna offering didn't help matters, though it was better looking than the original Piper jet. Another on bites the dust.

A great move forward, hampered by rear view wisdon. Take one engine off of the fuselage, and yes, it looks bizarre. Put only one engine in the tail, and you have vision, balance, and elegant engineering.

Don't count this one out.

Sad, was looking forward to seeing grand ol' Piper join the small jet ranks (not that it would benefit ME!)

Maybe somebody will buy the intellectual property and go forward.

Meanwhile, the Diamond D-Jet program keeps marching on. Diamond seem to have a good demand, so I think Piper just couldn't see itself competing with D-Jet, New Eclipse 550, Phenom 100 & Mustang.

It trully is a shame. When I first saw the the little jet, I was impressed that someone finally had the vision to try to move forward in these days of penny pinching. One engine IS CHEAPER THAN TWO! Look at the success of the Pilatus PC-12, it just makes good sence because in this age of pricy jet fuel the cost associated with having one engine instead of two makes the single engine Piper jet very desireable. Someone with deep pockets should buy the rites to this good idea and keep it going. With some design changes to make it a bit more attractive and a more poweful engine, I trully think it could be the benchmark for VLJ'S.

I have grown so tired of reading of the shut downs and hold backs
of good ideas and smart investments primarily due to this economic
failure that according to the facts at hand, could have been completely
avoided.
I really dig that wing configuration on that Altaire aircraft. I for one
hope it gets a chance to fly.
