As the economic downturn continues to stymie demand in the light and midsize business jet sectors, Bombardier has announced it is pausing production of its Learjet 60XR.

The decision comes after an extended period of low sales numbers for the seven-passenger jet, which boasts a 2,405 nm range and a cruise speed of Mach 0.81. After 19 Learjet 60XR deliveries last year, Bombardier reported just three deliveries during the first quarter of 2012.

As a result of the production suspension, slated to take place sometime this fall, approximately 275 employee positions associated with the jet are now at risk.

Bombardier says it is closely watching the bizjet market and will resume production of the 60XR if demand picks up.

As the company puts the brakes on its 60XR program, just last month it announced development is progressing steadily on its new Learjet 85, 70 and 75. The company said the three jets are expected to enter into service next year.
